GETTING AROUND THE DC METRO AREA
As a native of the DC area I have seen our small two lane roads grow to major highways. Since so many people in the area arrived here from somewhere else learning the tricks to getting around can be a challenge. Here are a couple of things for you to think about if your are relocating to the area. I'll be glad to share my shortcuts with you! If you are just arriving in the DC area you may hear of a unique commuters trick refered to as the "slug line." I have watched in amazement when I have told people who aren't from this area about drivers picking up strangers to grab a ride on the HOV lanes for the morning and afternoon commutes in and out of DC. You can read the official SLUG LINE site and my personal take on Northern Virginia SLUG LINES as well.
One of the easiest ways to get around the DC area is to take tadvantage of the metro system. Metro train are conveniently located in a radius around the city giving you plenty of options. Most stations have plenty of parking (though getting there early is a good idea) and if you have someone to drop you off you can use the "kiss and ride" lanes. In addition to the trains there are numerous metro buses throughout the area which allow transfers between the train and bus routes at no additional charge. For more information on the routes and fares check out the METRO SYSTEM MAP.
If you choose to live further outside of the city where the metro isn't available don't worry. A number of communities in Prince William and Stafford County are served by the VIRGINIA RAILWAY EXPRESS or VRE as it is referred to. The VRE also connects to the Metro System in a number of locations so you can ride the train part of the way and then switch to the metro to finish your trip. Check out information on some of the Prince William County neighborhoods that have grown up around the VRE stations.
If you decide to live in Prince William County the PRTC SYSTEM provides park and ride lots throughout the county for routes directly into key locations in DC or connections to the Springfield Metro Station.
